Anna Nezhnaya

Anna Nezhnaya, born in Moscow in 1987, has been a vibrant part of Berlin's art scene since 2016, where she continues to delve into and reshape the contours of contemporary art. Trained at the Moscow State University for Printing Arts and Graphics as a graphical artist, Anna brings a rich background in traditional imagery to the forefront of modern expression. Her journey is one of constant exploration, bridging the gap between the digital and the tangible, the past and the present.

In her latest works, Anna engages deeply with the concept of feminine archetypes and prototypes as they have been constructed and deconstructed throughout art history, now reimagined through her unique lens as a female artist. She draws from a rich tapestry of female demons, semi-demons, and mythical creatures, delving into the often-suppressed narratives of our civilization. Her medium of choice—neon glass and intense glossy lacquer colors, born from digital drawings—serves as a vibrant testament to our current reality. This reality oscillates between the push to move beyond the pressures of a civilization increasingly mediated by screens, and a lingering, almost intrinsic draw to the aesthetics of light and glass.

Anna's fascination with neon is more than an artistic preference; it is a profound inquiry into the essence of modern visibility and connectivity. For her, neon represents the quintessential archetype of a screen, frozen in its most fundamental state. The allure of neon's colors, the perfection of glass, and its inherent fragility speak volumes of Anna's artistic inquiries and affections.

Digital drawing, for Anna, is not merely a step in the process but a crucial bridge to the world of light art. These drawings are the preliminary studies for her neon sculptures, each piece a meticulous exploration of light's potential to define form and space. Through her experimental approaches to creating surface structures with new painting techniques, Anna is not only redefining the medium she works with but also the subjects she portrays. Her works are a dialogue with grotesque feminism, navigating the mysticism and metaphorical depths of femaleness in a way that is both groundbreaking and deeply reflective.
