Physical layers of metal and paint are embedded with cryptographic elements depicting religious and social iconography, offering fragments of an unfInished narrative that suggests more questions than answers. The cuts and bends of the metal and various surface finishes create distorted reflections, revealing not only the artwork itself but the uncertain reality in which it exists.
The precise, calculated metalwork is offset by the chemical reactions of applying lacquer, which can yield varied and unanticipated results. Using these traditional lacquer techniques with modern digital technologies gives Schmidleitner's work an energy that communicates on levels beyond our present, physical reality.
