NEW US "A New Contemporary"
New Us - A Contemporary Wave
Bluelobster Art is excited to present New Us: A Contemporary Wave, a dynamic group show featuring private and public works from Marios Djamo from Art_MaisonMarios.
This eclectic and unique group exhibition explores the politics of self/selfhood and the various ways that one expresses agency over how to understand and be understood, by others.
Berlin-based Cameroonian curator, collector, and advisor, Marios Djamo and Bluelobster Art, marry themes of diasporic representation and cultural heritage, inviting the audience to explore the dialectics of both visual language and art, which underscore the ever-changing landscape of contemporary art.
Featured artists include Barry Yusufu, Nedia Were, Boluwatife Oyediran, Matthew Eguavoen, Enoch Jr Chinweuba, Joseph Mobolaji Aina, Philip Letsu Komla, Qhamanande Maswana, Reggie Khumalo, David Komare , Maku Azu, Samuel Olayombo. These artists are shown in direct juxtaposition with portrayals of European and American subjects including American Gothic (Grant Wood, 1930, USA) and The Last Supper (Leonardo Davinci, 15th Century, Italy).
For this group exhibition, inspiration was drawn from multiple sources. Our collective artistic remit is to defy conventional modes of expressionism, moving with the waves of contemporary politics, education, and cultural heritage that underscore and define who we are as curators, collectors, and advisors to viewers that engage with this body of work.
The exhibition opens with The Cotton Flower (2021) by Bolu Oyediran, a work that portrays a common and shared history of transatlantic trauma from Africa to the Americas. In typical Bolu artistic style, the 2.50x4m piece is depicted with thick layers of acrylic paint, contrasted by tiny cotton fabric woven between lighter layers of paint. The physical and psychological history transcends time, geographies, and generations. Throughout the exhibition, abstract works continue to explore these themes of representation, cultural heritage and histories, and self/selfhood while challenging the materiality of the canvas by way of color, texture, and dimension.
“This group exhibition is about exploring the synergy of the canvas. I want viewers to enjoy the diversity and beauty of different perspectives, and to have the audacity to release themselves from the confines of what is deemed great and beautiful art.” - Marios Djamo
